“I don’t beat Sandy. She punches me, I punch back.”

“That still doesn’t look good,” I said.

He hesitated a moment. “Okay. I was pissed off. I keyed Julian’s car. The guy’s an asshole. But I didn’t kidnap him. I didn’t kill him. And you guys can’t prove that I did. So fuck both of you.”

“Oh, well, if you say so, it must be true,” JD said, his voice thick with sarcasm.

Clyde’s eyes narrowed at him. “Prove it. You ain’t got shit, and you know it. So you got my ass for petty vandalism. Big deal.”

“You are on probation,” I said. “That might be enough to send you back to prison.”

He swallowed hard. He hadn’t thought of that. “How am I supposed to prove I didn’t do it?”

There was a moment of silence.

“I dunno. But that’s something you can think about overnight.”

The chair screeched against the tile as I pushed away from the table and stood up. I knocked on the door, and a deputy outside buzzed it open. JD and I slipped into the hallway.

"What do you think?" JD asked after the door closed behind us.

"I don't know. We don’t really have anything on him except the vandalism.” I sighed. "We need something more concrete. I’ll talk to Anastasia and see if she wants to press charges.”

“I think she’s the one we ought to be looking at,” JD said. “I know you’ve been thinking it.”

“Anastasia’s on my list.”

“She might be worth a closer look,” Denise said, finding us in the hallway.

We both gave her a curious glance.

"I thought you might find this interesting. Julian and Anastasia took out a life insurance policy on the business. If either dies, the survivor stands to gain a $30 million payout."

“Now that’s motive,” JD said.

"Of course, insurance won’t pay without a death certificate, and a presumption of death won’t be declared on a missing person for at least five years,” Denise said.

“If Anastasia was looking for a quick payout, she's not going to get it without a body," I said.

“But with Julian out of the way, she might be able to sell the operation to ASU," JD said. “From what you’ve told me, I get the impression that Anastasia is more interested in the lifestyle the business provides than the actual business. But, hey, what do I know? You're the one who's spent time with the woman.”

“Just to make this more confusing,” Denise said. “The lab came back with a match on a palm print found on the trunk of Julian’s car.” She nodded to the interrogation room. “Clyde must have rested his hand against the trunk lid when he was keying the car.”

“Dipshit,” JD said.

“Between the gas station receipt, the eyewitnesses at the strip club, and the palm print, there’s no doubt he was there at the time of Julian’s disappearance,” Denise said.

“Yeah, but we haven’t established that Julian was actually there,” I said.

Denise gave me a curious look.

I thought hard for a moment. "My gut tells me that Clyde was pretty pissed off at Julian, but he doesn't have much to gain by his death, other than the satisfaction of it.
